MP welcomes “long overdue” reform of Special Educational Needs

Halesowen and Rowley Regis MP James Morris has welcomed reforms proposed by the Government to change the way that support is provided for children with Special Educational Needs (SEN).

The changes announced this week will replace the current long and complex SEN statementing process and Learning Difficulty Assessments with a single simpler assessment process and education plan.

Parents of children with these education plans will be given more control over how money is spent to support their child, to ensure that they receive the right help for them. read more »

This Saturday, I shall be going with my wife Anna to the St George’s Day parade, which is in Stourbridge this year.

I believe that it is important that we celebrate England’s patron saint and that we reclaim celebration of our national identity from those extremist groups who seek to use it to divide our communities.

It is also an opportunity to reflect on what identity really means – what makes us “us”.

Most people recognise that identity isn’t a question of the colour of your skin, it is about belonging – a shared community and a common interest. read more »

Local groups looking forward to big lottery wins

Local community and voluntary groups look set to bid for a share of the £40million that the Big Lottery Fund allocates to projects in the West Midlands every year.

Halesowen and Rowley Regis MP James Morris and the Big Lottery Fund held a Funding Day at the Hope Centre in Halesowen for groups to learn about what funding is available and how local organisations could improve their chances of being successful. read more »

Budget will boost local manufacturing and support high-tech Black Country jobs

I believe that this Budget will support the economy of the black country, part of which I represent, and, in particular, the skilled manufacturing and high-tech industries on which so many of my constituents depend for their jobs. I am especially pleased about the Chancellor’s proposals for an above-the-line tax credit for research and development, about which I wrote to him at the end of last year. read more »

MP Demands Debate on Mental Health Care

Halesowen and Rowley Regis MP James Morris has called for a debate in Parliament on mental health care, particularly in acute settings.

Mr Morris has submitted the request with the House of Commons’ Backbench Committee, following a meeting in Parliament with Mind volunteers, carers and service users from the West Midlands. The MP listened to the challenges faced by people with mental health problems in getting access to emergency mental health care. read more »
