James demands action on excessive bonuses

Halesowen and Rowley Regis MP James Morris has called for Parliament to take action to tackle bankers’ bonuses.

Speaking in Parliament, Mr Morris asked the Leader of the House of Commons to schedule a debate on why the previous Government failed to secure undertakings on bonus levels from the banks that took taxpayers’ money and on measures that can now be taken to curb excessive payments. read more »

Health Through Warmth

The weather may have turned decidedly chilly, but one Halesowen couple is warm and snug thanks to help from a local warmth scheme.

Local pensioners Barry and Mary Clement welcomed Halesowen and Rowley Regis MP James Morris into their home to see the new boiler that they have bought through npower’s Health through Warmth scheme.

Last autumn, the couple’s boiler broke down, leaving them facing the prospect of a cold winter without any heating or hot water. This would have caused particular problems for Mr Clement’s health as the effects of his diabetes worsen in cold weather. read more »

Give a little, gain a lot

Halesowen and Rowley Regis MP James Morris is encouraging local year 11 students to sign up for this summer’s National Citizen Service programme.

Dudley and Sandwell have been included in this year’s pilot programmes, giving local young people to gain a wide range of experiences after they complete their exams.

The programme will run for six weeks, including two weeks away from home, and will offer a packed schedule of adventure activities to help develop young people’s leadership and team-building skills. read more »

James Morris, Member of Parliament for Halesowen & Rowley Regis, has spoken in Parliament about the need for more support to be given to local high streets and town centres.

Responding to the review carried out by retail expert Mary Portas, Mr Morris praised the action that is being taken to regenerate Halesowen town centre but called for local councils to be given more freedom to act to support local high streets. read more »

MP demands end to “compensation for crooks”

James Morris, MP for Halesowen & Rowley Regis, has called for action to stop criminals from claiming compensation when they injure themselves whilst committing crimes.

The MP’s demand comes after figures reveal that offenders claim £5million a year from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority, including payments made to burglars who hurt themselves leaving a property that they have broken in to.

340 prison inmates were awarded a total of £3.1million last year, with one prisoner being awarded £500,000. read more »

Register and save a life

James Morris is urging local residents to make their New Year resolutions to save a life by joining the NHS Organ Donor Register.

Although people can join the Register at the same time that they send off for a driving licence, register with a GP or even when they apply for a Boots Advantage card, only 24.5% of people in the West Midlands have signed up – one of the lowest figures in the country.

Work promised on town centre “eyesore”

Action to bring buildings in Halesowen High Street up to scratch has been promised by the buildings’ landlords.

The buildings, which house businesses including The Carpet Shop and Rainbow Café, have been slammed as an “eyesore” and “a blight on the High Street” by Halesowen shoppers.

Halesowen & Rowley Regis MP James Morris wrote to the owners of the buildings after being contacted by a number of local residents about the peeling paint along the tops of the shop fronts. read more »

Everything’s sorted for Christmas post

Halesowen and Rowley Regis MP James Morris has visited Halesowen’s Royal Mail Delivery Office in Coombs Wood to see for himself how preparations are going for the Christmas post.

On a tour of the centre, James met with local postmen and women and discussed how new working practices are changing the way that they work. The staff at Coombs Wood are responsible for delivering festive cheer to over 44,000 addresses in Halesowen and Cradley. read more »
